Mr. Invincible. Cristiano Ronaldo becomes leading international goalscorer

Portugal beat the Republic of Ireland in their first World Cup qualifier that took place last night. The score was 2-1 and who scored? none other than the main man Cristiano Ronaldo himself.

This was a momentous occasion for Cristiano as it was the opportunity to become the highest goalscorer in international football. He needed only one goal to go past Iran’s Ali Daei as the top scorer.

Despite missing a penalty in the 15th minute, Cristiano managed to score a brace in the 89th and 95th minute showing us he never fails to rise to the occasion.

Portugal career

Cristiano Ronaldo made his international debut aged 18 in 2003 under Luiz Felipe Scolari against Kazakhstan. He came on in the second half for Portuguese legend Luis Figo from whom he took the baton of being Portugal’s globally renowned star.
Since his debut, Cristiano Ronaldo has featured and scored in all of the international competitive competitions and was made captain of the Country in 2007.

Trophies and accolades

In his 18 year-long International career Cristiano Ronaldo has been a mainstay of the Portuguese team and hence has become the highest international goalscorer scoring 111 goals in 180 games.

In 2016, Cristiano Ronaldo led Portugal to the first-ever major trophy by beating France 1-0 in the Euro 2016 finals. He was the second-highest goalscorer in the tournament with three goals.


Portugal also became the first team to ever win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 by beating the Netherlands in the final held in Porto.
