Indian Super League (ISL) is popular as the highest Indian professional football league. ISL (Indian Super League) season seven started in November 2020 and will finish in March 2021. It is also the twenty-fifth season of the Indian Football League. ISL season seven is being held privately in three venues of Goa.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis authorities have decided to host it in a private manner. The new season of ISL has brought in some changes related to team formation. Earlier, ISL teams were permitted to keep at most seven players of foreign nationalities.
New Guidelines
As per the new guidelines, it is compulsory for the teams to include one foreign national from AFC (Asian Football Confederation) affiliated nation. In other words, ISL can form a squad containing a maximum of 6 foreign nationals out of which one player should be from an AFC based country.
morever, there are more additions to the new regulations this year. The number of permitted substitutions has been increased from three to five players this season. The squad strength has been increased from 35 players that can be registered per squad.
New Team
This year a new team has also been incorporated named as East Bengal. Making the total teams playing in season seven to be 11. This year ISL would be held in Fartoda stadium, Margo. The other two are- GMC Athletic stadium, Bambolin and Tilak Maidan stadium, Vasco da Gama.
The new guidelines (2010-2021) are effective from season seven which has started in November 2020. The new rules have come after a meeting held by Football Sports Development Ltd (FSDL) whose chairman is Mrs. Nita Ambani.
The decision has been communicated to All India Football Federation (AIFF) and other investors. This move has been made to encourage Indian players to increase their participation. ISL has always strived for adopting changes for the betterment of the sports.
Something new every season
They have always brought something new every season which favors local participation in the game of football. The governing body has issued a statement saying that the organizing committee of ISL along with FSDL will collaboratively work with the AIFF. They will introduce a roadmap for foreign players in the coming months.
This means that ISL can have a minimum of five and a maximum of seven players in their team. Out of which one player essentially has to be a citizen of an AFC nation. This decision will go in a long way to promote football among Indian players. This will give Indian footballers an opportunity to secure top positions in the team.
The decision has been taken jointly by ISL, its clubs and AIFF. Moreover ISL has become a part of the AFC; therefore the AFC regulations are also applicable to ISL.
The decision came in May which stated to implement 3 foreign players +1 Asian player rule with effect from season 2020-2021.
