The explosive English batsman is all set to make a comeback to the English setup after 3 years. This opening came when Jonny Bairstow suffered an injury while playing golf.
Alex Hales failed the doping test for the 2019 Cricket World Cup and was never even considered for team selection during these past three years. Former English captain Eoin Morgan said that he violated the spirit of the game and disrespected the team’s values.
Hales since then has been playing franchise cricket around the globe making amends for his mistake and has improved his T20 game a lot. He was a part of the Sydney Thunder outfit for the last three years and Sydnry’d bowling coach Shane Bond some in his favors saying Alex deserves a second chance more than everyone.
Somebody’s tragedy paves the way for someone else’s success and Jonny Bairstow’s injury did just that paving the path for Hales T20I’s return for the English Outfit for the World Cup in October. He was a big figure in England’s ODI setup but has also played 31 T20Is for the English team scoring with an average of 31 and a strike rate of 136.65.
After Bairstow’s injury, Jason Roy was another possible outcome for the ECB selection board but Alex Hales’s recent endeavors and form were enough to convince the ECB director Robert Key to say that Alex has done his time for the misdemeanors and is now needed to serve the crown as the opening batsman for the English Team in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia where Hales has played a lot of franchise cricket for Sydney. He said that selection this time will be done purely on the basis of form and ability.
Former England captain and legend of the Gentlemen’s Game, Nassir Hussain said hopeful things about Hales after seeing his brilliant chasing performances and ability to handle pressure in important points in the match. Hussain said, “I try and pick people on their ability as a cricketer really. He did the crime, he served his time, forgive, move on. It’s a bit easier for him now because there is no Morgan, there is no Stokes in 50-over cricket. There are a couple of opportunities. Try and pick your best side.”
Eoin Morgan who was the skipper for the English side when Hales was found guilty of doping also said some kind things about Hales.
The only English captain to win the World Cup said, “There’s one thing about Alex, his quality has never been a question. It’s whether the team would like him in the side, or captains can trust him, or the coach, or the selectors. But there’s no doubt he’s extremely destructive and a match-winner.”
