The journey of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, From Past to Present

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran who is popularly known as G Sathiyan is an Indian Table tennis player who is currently ranked 32 in the world according to the rankings in April,2020. He has broke into the top 25 ranked players in the world according to the ITTF rankings where he stood 24th in May,2019. He is the first Indian table tennis player to sign for a team in the Japanese T-league where he was signed by Okayama Rivets.

He is currently an employee in ONGC.

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran EARLY LIFE:

Sathiyan was born on 8th January 1993 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. From a very young age Sathiyan took interest in table tennis he joined the academy when he was 5 years old it was then that he wouldn’t reach the height of the table. His family wanted him to take the safe side and complete his education by completing engineering. Sathiyan is an  B.TECH in information technology from St  Joseph College of Engineering, Chennai.


in September 2016 Sathiyan announced himself in the world stage in Table Tennis by winning in the men’s singles category in his maiden ITTF pro tour title when he won the ITTF Challenge Belgium Open title.

In 2017 and created history by becoming the first Indian Table Tennis player ever to win two ITTF pro tour title which was also a special year for Sathiyan where he won gold in the men’s singles category of the ITTF Challenge – Spanish Open, in Almeria.

In April 2018, in his debut Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast, Australia he won three medals.

In the 2018 Asian games Jakarta, Indonesia whwere he played a very important role by winning both his games versus japan and ensuring the bronze medal to the mens team category which was their first in 60 years.

In the Asian TT Championships 2019 Sathiyan managed topull off his  biggest win of his career by defeating the Japanese table tennis player and in the same tournament he was the first Indian to reach the quarterfinals of the mens single category after a gap of 43 years.

In November 2019, Sathiyan made his debut World Cup appearance, after topping his group and reach the round of 16 in 2019 ITTF Men’s World Cup where he was eventually defeated.

  • Awarded the ARJUNA AWARD 2018
  • Winning back to back ITTF pro tour title in 2016 and 2017
  • Winning the TOISA Table Tennis player of the year Jury choice  award in 2017
  • Winning 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 bronze in the commonwealth games 2018
  • Winning 1 Bronze in team event in the 2018 Asian games
  • Achieving world ranking 24th highest by any Indian in 2019
