Early life: Ashish Kumar

Ashish Kumar is an Indian Amateur Boxer who was inspired by his brothers and cousins to take up boxing. The 26yr old competes in the Middleweight category in international competitions.



                   Ashish, an enthusiast boxer was on 18th July 1994. He is from a village called Dhahotu of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh. Kumar’s family is full of boxers. His father was a National level Kabaddi player and was also a farmer. In February 2020 Kumar’s father expired due to illness.

Kumar wished to take sports as his career. He had to choose between wrestling and boxing, as his brothers and cousins were boxers, Kumar also took boxing. His brothers and cousin were his biggest inspiration to take up the sport.


              Ashish started playing boxing at the age 14. He went for training at the Sundarnagar Boxing Academy. At the age of 16, he had shifted to Bhiwani, the native of Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh, to focus on his training determinedly. His father was very supportive and motivated him every day.  

At the 35th National Games, Ashish bagged his first senior national Gold medal held in Kerala. In 2018, he secured two Bronze medals, each at the Boxing Nationals and Asian Games Test event. Ashish made his debut at the India Open International Boxing in 2018 and reached the quarterfinals. Later, he participated in the President’s Cup.

He also participated in the International Boxing Tournament which took place in the year 2019 in Stranja, Bulgaria. He won his first international Gold medal in the Middleweight category representing India at the Thailand Open in 2019. This achievement made him qualify for the 2019 World Boxing Championships.


                        His debut in the Asian Boxing Championships was in 2019 and won a Silver in the 75kg Middleweight category held in Bangkok, Thailand.

By reaching the semi-finals of the 2020 Asia and Oceania Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament held in Amman, Jordan, Ashish qualified for his debut Olympics at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics which is his greatest achievement till date.
