The Internation Weightlifting Federation(IWF) has confirmed that Indian Weightlifting Champion Mirabai Chanu has Officially qualified for the Tokyo Olympics 2020. She has been selected to compete in the women’s 49 kg category.
Chanu qualified for the Olympics by securing a bronze medal in Asian Championship that took place in Tashkent in April. She has qualified based on her position on the IWF’s Absolute Ranking List.
Chanu’s first breakthrough was at the Glasgow edition of the Commonwealth Games; she won the silver medal in the 48 kg weight category.
It will be exciting to see Padma Shri Mirabai Chanu perform at the much awaited Tokyo Olympics 2020!
After the unfortunate events at the 2016 Rio Olympics where she failed to lift any of the weights in the clean and jerk, this surely is going to be a chance for redemption.
According to the IWF rules: The 8 leading weightlifters in each of the 14 weight categories, inluding the 7 categories in the women’s list, are eligible to compete in the Olympics.
China’s Hou Zhihui currently leads the Absolute Ranking list with 4926,4422 points. Chanu has 4133,6172 points in her kitty.
The final list will be released on June 25 2021.
