Tokyo Olympics 2020: Sania Mirza To Become The First Indian Female Athlete At Four Olympic Games

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 will get underway from 23rd July. If the famous Indian Tennis Player Sania Mirza plays at The Tokyo Games, she will become the first Female Athlete to represent India at four different Olympics.

Sania Mirza is back after a long break from her game because of COVID circumstances. The 30-year-old has returned with sheer will and strength. In case you are wondering ‘How did Sania Mirza get Qualified for the Tokyo Games?’, here is the reason.

According to the WTA rules, when a player takes a long break (longer than 6 months) from his/her game, they are eligible to apply for ‘Protective Ranking’ on account of physical injury or pregnancy leave. This is also sometimes known as ‘Special Ranking’. The Special Ranking is a player’s ranking on the tournament they last played in.

I was told if I do play in Tokyo I will have competed in the most number of Olympics by any woman, teaming up with someone else. I am ever so grateful for being here and look forward to my next Olympics.

She added.

Sania played alongside Rohan Bopanna in the Rio 2016 Olympics but failed to win any medal. However, she is all ready now and is excited about playing alongside Ankita Rana in the Tokyo Olympics. Sania has never played alongside a fellow female Indain tennis player who is in the Top-100 ranking.
