Indian Discuss Throw Athlete, Kamalpreet Kaur made it to the finals of the Olympics 2020 on Saturday. Kaur broke the national record and advanced into the finals with a cracking massive throw of 64.0 m. She nailed the direct qualification mark in the round on Saturday.
Kamalpreet Kaur is not a widely-known personality compared to the other athletes in her group. Cuba’s world No. 1 and 2019 world champion Yaime Perez, world No. 4 Valarie Allman of the USA, and many others are in group B along with Kaur. Nevertheless, she was able to get a direct qualification with her skills. She was one of the only two athletes who were able to get a direct qualification, that too out of 31 athletes in total.
On her first attempt, Kamalpreet registered a throw of 60.02 m. The throw was way below the expectations as she had broken the national record earlier with a throw of 65.06 m at the Federation Cup.
Kamalpreet’s coach Rakhi who was unable to attend the Olympics was watching her match closely. She quickly analyzed her problem and gave the instructions to on-site coaches Radhakrishnan Prabhakaran and Mohinder Singh. Kaur was not able to generate enough momentum in her lower body. This was assessed by Rakhi and her instructions were relayed to Kaur on a phone call.
As a result of these instructions, Kaur was able to get a throw of 63.97 m on her second attempt. What followed was a ginormous throw of 64.0 m right on the Olympic Qualification mark. This throw on her third attempt put Kaur directly into the finals.
Kamalpreet will now be competing at the Women’s Discus Throw Finals on Monday at 4:30 pm. Let’s hope that she is able to get India a second medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
