Tilak Verma was bought by Mumbai Indians in this year’s mega-auction. Mumbai has scouted him and that is proven by the fact that to get him on their team, they ended up paying 1.7 crore INR. However, as turns out Tilak has been worth each penny the way he has performed for the team. A 19-year-old boy from Hyderabad, Tilak has played for India in the Under-19 world cup 2020 but could not perform up to the mark. It was his performance in domestic cricket that drew talent hunters from Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians have managed to win only one match out of 9 matches played so far and Tilak has been their most consistent batsman. With Ishan Kishan moving up in the order in the absence of southpaw Quinton De Kock, Tikal found his place in the middle order. In the initial matches, due to the unavailability of Surya Kumar Yadav, Tilak provided much-needed stability to MI. Tilak, who belongs to Hyderabad, is also the youngest player for Mumbai Indians to score a fifty. He achieved this feat in his only second match against Rajasthan Royals where he hit the likes of Ashwin, Chahal, and Krishna out of the park.

He played shots with elegance and yet with ease to impress all the viewers. Mumbai team, this season, could not perform as a team but Tilak did not miss this opportunity to make his mark. He is the highest run-scorer for the team, hitting 307 runs in 9 matches with an average of 137+. What adds to his contribution is that he has hit 15 sixes and 20 fours, proving he can hit big shots as well, if the situation of the game demands.

What adds to his cricketing personality is that apart from batting in the middle order with utmost perfection, he can bowl as well. After getting his cap from MI and Indian cricket skipper Rohit Sharma, Tilak said “I have always liked Rohit Bhai, so getting the cap from him really pumped me up and gave me confidence.” As it turns out, Tilak has not failed to impress his captain.

Mumbai Indians, after winning their last match against Rajasthan Royals, will aspire to finish the season with a respectable place at the point table with decent points. Tilak’s franchise might not have a great season this year but finding players like Tilak Verma would be a consolidatory price. At such a young age, if Tilak has managed to fix his place in Mumbai Indian’s playing 11. Let’s hope he keeps growing and one day take his place in the Indian team as well.
