Here is an Interview with Devon Conway’s Coach Glenn Pocknall.
2 Days ago, Devon Conway made a record-breaking double hundred. One of the happiest guys on this feat is the Head Coach of Wellington Firebirds, Glenn Pocknall, under whom Conway is playing for close to 4 years.
Recently, I interviewed this very successful coach through the very popular Twitter DM where he opened up on Devon Conway and on New Zealand’s chances of winning the WTC Final and the WT20 2021. Hence, here are his answers to those questions –
Therefore, Interview with Devon Conway’s Coach Glenn Pocknall-
Q – First things First , how happy are you for Devon Conway ?
A – Feeling very happy for him as he has worked incredibly hard and has made many tough choices in his life . So , to see a good person succeed feels nice .
Q – Do you remember that day when you first met Devon Conway ?
A – I was at a trial game and there I met this quite unassuming bloke . He batted at 10 in that game and when he played one of his trademark cover drives , Bruce Edgar and I just looked at each other . I feel lucky as I am seeing that cover drive from the past 4 years .
Q – How you started your coaching career ?
A – To gain knowledge and experience , I started as an analyst and I kept on gaining the experience both in New Zealand and overseas countries with the goal to become an international cricket coach one day .
Q – You have the experience of coaching both men and women team . What changes does a coach needs to bring in his style while dealing with women cricketers ?
A – First and foremost , they all are professionals of this game . So , a coach should always try to get an understanding of what their game needs and the need should tailor their approach towards those cricketers .
Q – Wellington Cricket Team has given many talented players to the New Zealand National Team . Which player from the current squad of Wellington you think will serve the New Zealand Team for the longest time ?
A – Rachin Ravindra and Finn Allen are two young players who are right at the edge of the current Blackcaps team . Their plus point is that they both are only 21-22 . I see both these players having a long career for New Zealand . The key for them is their hunger to learn and eagerness to improve their game .
Q – With almost all bases covered , New Zealand are one of the strongest contenders to win WT20 2021 . What are your thoughts on this ?
A – The team is coming off a very good home season of T20 Cricket . They will be right in the mix to be a leading team at the WT20 . They have a top order filled with power and skill and have the bowling covered with excellent pace and spin options . If they put it all together in each match , then they will be hard to defeat .
Q – How excited are you for the WTC Finale to be held between India and New Zealand ?
A – Can’t wait for that . I chance at history for the New Zealand or India to take out this first Final . It’s going to be an intriguing and exciting 5 days for the cricket fans all over the world , no matter which way it goes .
Q – In the near future , will we see you at any coaching position in the New Zealand National Team ?
A – I would love to get an opportunity to be involved with the National Team . It’s been my dream since I started coaching 20 years ago . The team is going very well , so there may not be anything coming my way but I will always keep working hard and strive to get better as a coach .
