Women in Blue thrashed by the Blackcaps by 62 runs in the 8th ODI of the ICC Women’s World Cup. The match had some ups and downs for both sides. The match highlights and insights are below:
Mithali Raj sent the Kiwi to bat first with Shafali kept out of the playing 11. The start was splendid by the Kiwi women but it was short-lived when Pooja directly hit the stumps to send back S. Bates on 5 runs. S.Devine, the Captain along with the 21 years youngster A.Kerr handled the things pretty well and that’s where the runs started to come at a very maintained run rate. In the 11th Over, Pooja gave India the second breakthrough of Kiwis Captain. But the later the runs did not come as the Blackcaps looked solid and a four came in every over with run rate soaring a high of 5. runs per over till the 22 over when India got another wicket.
The fall of wicket did not impact Kiwis much and Satterthwaite along with M.Green kept on going well. The score of 75 by Amy kept the Blackcaps in a great position. The wickets came in at intervals for India and especially in death overs where Pooja took 4 wickets where two of her wickets came on in 2 consecutive balls and R.Gaikwad 2, were among the highest wicket-takers while Jhulan and Deepti took 1each. Kiwi’s finished at 260/9 in their 50 overs.
Chasing a total of 261, Yastika and Smriti could not give India the start they were looking for. An early wicket fell and the run rate started to soar high with 2 wickets falling in the 1st powerplay. India was 26/2 when Mithali took over and then with 25 coming in the next 10 overs India was 50/3. India’s Captain and Vice-Captain looked on to move forward. But after adding 31 to the total tally Mithali stepped out to the leg spinner to hit a biggie over the leg side and tumbled outside of the crease. The next ball in and the Googly by A.Kerr had shocked the newcomer R.Ghosh on the very first ball bowled. India had to get 160 in the last 20 overs with 5 down on 97. The partnership of Rana and H.Kaur was of just 30 runs when India lost Rana at 127.
The run rate in mind of Harman kept her going when she added a couple of sixes and fours. But a wrong shot on the offside against Kerr sent her packing back to the pavilion. India could not capitalize after Jhulan had her magic with the bat too and eventually lost by 62 runs in the end. For New zealand it was, Tahuhu and a.Kerr who took three wickets each and snatched the match away.
Player of the Match: Amy Satterthwaite for her 75 off 84 deliveries.
