Liverpool vs AC Milan kicks off the group of death in the UCL. This is a rare occasion where football royalty faces each other, and this game is a throwback and will be a great watch.
Clash of European Giants
Not many matches in the champions league get more iconic than Liverpool vs AC Milan. The game they played in the 2005 UCL Final, has gone down as one of the greatest finals in tournament history.
These two clubs have played 2 UCL finals against each other, and both of them have a title, defeating the other team. Liverpool did it in 2005, being 3-0 down, coming back level, and then winning it in penalties. AC Milan got their revenge in 2007, beating them 2-1 in the final.
These two European Giants face each other after 12 plus years. Both clubs have had their ups and downs, but now they face each other, at the top of their games, in a competition where they both belong.
Let’s preview their group game taking place today. Liverpool vs AC Milan is taking place at Anfield, on 16th September at 12:30 AM, IST.
AC Milan: Zlatan is still going strong even though he’s gonna be 40 in two weeks. He grabbed a goal this weekend, however, will be missing in action against Liverpool due to an Achilles tendon strain. Olivier Giroud and Raphael Leao will be good to go.
Even with losing players key players like Calhanoglu and Donarumma, AC Milan was able to do well in replacing them with Mike Maignan and Sandro Tonali in the transfer window.
Liverpool: Harvey Elliot definitely misses out due to the injury he picked up vs Leeds on Sunday. Minamino is back, but Bobby Firmino is yet to join full training, since coming back from international duty. New signing, Ibrahim Konate, is likely to make his first appearance of the season.
AC Milian: Maignan, Calabria, Tomori, Romangolli, Hernandez, Tonali, Kessie, Florenzi,Diaz, Rebic, Leao,
Liverpool: Allison, Alexander-Arnold, Van Djik, Konate, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Keita, Mane, Salah, Jota.
Both teams are heading into the game, with a great start to the season. They are unbeaten in their respective leagues, AC Milan is in second, winning all 3 games, and only behind on goal difference.
Liverpool is in the same situation, as they are one of the 4 teams on 10 points and in 3rd, only because of goals scored.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been in sublime form, creating 17 chances in the first four games. With Van Djik back, and Salah just always scoring Liverpool looks back at their best.
Last season when Stefano Pioli’s men visited England, they were able to upset Manchester United and will be looking to do the same. Ante Rebic and Raphael Leao have been linking up very well and Kessie will look to control the midfield.
- These two teams have only played each other twice in the UCL, both times in the final. Liverpool won theirs on penalties and AC Milan won 2-1.
- Liverpool have not won their first games against Italian sides in the previous two seasons.
- Milan has only won one of their 13 games against English teams.
- Since 2017-18, only two teams have won more games than Liverpool in the UCL
