After starting off with a heavy loss in their respective opening matches, both Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will look to secure their first points in the tournament when they face each other on June 4. Sri Lanka have won only two of their last sixteen completed ODIs and will be down on confidence after their 10-wicket thrashing by New Zealand.
Afghanistan handed a 91-run defeat to Sri Lanka when these two teams last faced-off against each other in the game’s 50-over format. Even though they got hammered by Australia in their World Cup opening game, Afghanistan may still go into this game with an unchanged line-up.
Sri Lanka have no injury issues to deal with ahead of their clash against Afghanistan, and despite being thumped by New Zealand in their opening game, they are not expected to make any changes to their line-up. Sri Lanka have now played ten one-day internationals this year and have been able to win just one of those. After a disappointing Asia Cup last year, the Lankans faced a 1-3 loss to England at home before being swept 0-3 and 0-5 by New Zealand and South Africa respectively. They opened their World Cup campaign last Saturday with a humiliating 10-wicket defeat against New Zealand at this very ground.
Pitch report & Weather forecast
Weather Report : Today’s weather is turning out to be light rain shower. The daytime temperature is going to reach 16 °c and the temperature is going to dip to 10 °c at night. We expect around 2.3 mm of precipitation to fall and cloud covering 70% of the sky, the humidity will be around 86%.
Pitch Report: Conditions at Cardiff are likely to be overcast and the Sri Lankan seamers could make early inroads into the Afghan batting line-up. Five of the last seven one-day internationals (including Saturday’s World Cup encounter between New Zealand and Sri Lanka) played at the Sophia Gardens have been won by the side batting second. Toss, therefore, will be key here and the team that wins it in this match is likely to bowl first.
Average first innings score:
If Afghanistan bats then it will be 260-290
If Sri Lanka bats then it will be 250-270
Record of chasing teams: Won – 5, Lost – 0
