Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson face-off as Captain in ICC Events

Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson are set to face each other as captains in the finals of the World Test Championship. The two legendary batsmen have faced each other twice as captains in ICC events. The second time they met was in the Semi-finals of the 2019 Cricket World Cup.  Let’s quickly get a recap of that match.


It was toss time at Old Trafford in Manchester. Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bat first.

Opening the batting for New Zealand were Henry Nicholls and Martin Guptill. Bumrah provided early breakthrough sending the dangerous Guptill back in the pavilion early in the innings. Captain Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls built a partnership, before Nicholls departed. Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson stiched a brilliant partnership. Both the players crossed the half century mark. New Zealand reached 239/8 in their quota of 50 overs. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor were the major contributers with the bat. For India Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of the bowler picking up 3 wickets.

India had to chase 240 in 50 overs. Opening the batting for India were Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. India got off to a miserable start. They lost both openers and Captain Virat Kohli in the first 3 overs of their innings. India kept losing wickets before MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja built a partnership. It looked like that both the batsman would get India over the line. An unfortunate shot by Jadeja saw him back in the pavilion. Dhoni was run-out by the slightest margin by a brilliant throw by Guptill sealed the match for New Zealand. India ended 221/10 in 49.3 overs. Jadeja topscored for India with 77 runs. For New Zealand Matt Henry was the pick of the bowler taking 3 wickets.

This was the second time Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson faced each other as captains in an ICC event.
