1999 World Cup: Partnership of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid

On this day in 1999, the two greats of Indian Cricket Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid notched up a partnership of 318 runs for the second wicket in the World Cup encounter with Sri Lanka in Taunton. Only two other pairs of Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels who scored 372 and Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid who scored 331 have surpassed them.

India was playing Sri Lanka who were the defending champions of the World Cup. Sri Lanka won the toss and put India into batting.

For India S. Ramesh and Sourav Ganguly walked into bat. Chaminda Vass dismissed S.Ramesh for just 5runs. In walked Rahul Dravid to Support Sourav. They took the charge against the Sri Lankan bowlers and had a partnership of 318 runs. Sourav scored his career-best 183 runs while Rahul notched up 145. India lost its 2nd wicket in the 46th over of the game. The score being 324. No other batsman could manage something big and India completed 373/6 at the end of 50 overs.

The heroics of Ganguly and Dravid guided India to a mammoth score. Sri Lanka did not have a good start and lost 2 early wickets. They were reduced to 23/2 with both openers back in the pavilion. Sri Lanka lost wickets in intervals. They were bundled out for 216 in 42.3 overs.

Aravinda de Silva top-scored for Sri Lanka with 56 runs while skipper Arjuna Ranatunga scored 42 runs.
