Team India’s pace bowler, 32-year-old Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the Australian series due to covid as per BCCI Officials on 17th September. The Indian reached Mohali for the first T20i between the two teams on 20th September however, the veteran pacer was missing. Reportedly, the Australian team has also reached the city.
Umesh Yadav has been named as the likely replacement c for Shami whose health will be monitored by BCCI. Umesh Yadav will also need to go through the covid testing procedures before joining the team. Umesh recently left his county cricket stint unfinished where he was representing Middlesex due to a quad muscle injury.
The team of Middlesex County on 17th September said in an official statement that Umesh Yadav has recently traveled back to India for a health check-up by BCCI’s medical team and he has not made sufficient recovery to join the team, especially considering that the matches are four-day long and hence he will not be participating in rest of the season of county championship which is going on.
The Australians will play the last game of the tour against India on 25th September after the second match on 23rd.
The Selection of Shami for the series against South Africa is also in doubt now and will completely depend on his recovery from corona infection. India will play South Africa from 28th September to 4th October with a match on 2nd October in the 3-match series.
Mohammed Shami was picked up in the T20 squad of the team almost after a year and he must be expecting to make a grand comeback. His performance in these bilateral matches could have been important knowing that he will be going to Australia with India’s 15-man squad next month for the World Cup as a traveling reserve.
