IPL 2021: Can KKR live up to their expectations?

KKR crumbling under pressure

With KKR being one of the three teams that have multiple IPL titles, the men in purple and gold are always held to high expectations.
Due to the ownership of Shah Rukh Khan and Kolkata being India’s most sports-crazy city, KKR has one of the biggest followings in the IPL.

KKR is in a muddy position, winning only 2 of their 7 games in the first phase of the IPL, leaving them 7th in the table. KKR has not qualified for the knockouts since 2018 and this would be the third time in a row, which isn’t acceptable for such a big franchise.

No Doubt on paper KKR has a squad to win the IPL but now they face the herculean task of winning 6 of their remaining 7 games to reach the playoffs.

KKR’s middle order needs to pull themselves together

On paper, KKR has the strongest middle order in the tournament which consists of Rana, DK, Morgan, and Russel. These are seasoned IPL performers and all have the ability to change the game.

Their star batsmen this season have been Nitish Rana with 207 runs in seven games at an average of 28.71.

However, the performances of all the other international stars as been poor. All three combine for a total of only 378 runs at an average of 20.

KKR kickstart their campaign on the 20th of September in Abu Dhabi vs RCB.

Pat Cummins: A big miss

KKRs obvious absentee will be their record signing Pat Cummins. He was signed for a whopping Rs. 15.5CR and was their main wicket-taker, picking up 9 wickets in the first phase.

Pat Cummins has ruled himself out of the IPL second league due to the scheduled birth of his child and for him to stay mentally prepared for the T-20 World cup in October.

New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee comes in as his replacement.

Eoin Morgan (C), Shivam Mavi, Shubman Gill, Sunil Narine, Tim Seifert, Varun Chakravarthy, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Vaibhav Arora, Karun Nair, Harbhajan Singh, Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik, Kuldeep Yadav, Lockie Ferguson, Nitish Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Tim Southee, Rahul Tripathi, Sandeep Warrier, Rinku Singh, Shakib Al Hasan, Sheldon Jackson, Ben Cutting, Pawan Negi, Venkatesh Iyer.
