The ongoing Duleep Trophy tournament saw some scary action on the 16th of September when West Zone and Central Zone were at the SNR College Cricket Ground at Coimbatore to compete for the win.
Central Zone was batting on the second day of the match when we all witnessed a medical scare suffered by Venkatesh Iyer as Chintan Gaja threw a wild overthrow that hit the batter on his head.
Venkatesh Iyer hit Gaja for a six and defended the next ball back to the bowler when he threw the ball in an aggravated manner such that the ball hit the all-rounder on his neck.
The injury’s seriousness was of that sort that the Ambulance had to enter the SNR College Stadium as he fell almost instantly on the ground and was seen in great visible pain.
For the fans watching the match, relief came when Venkatesh decided to get up and walk to the dressing room instead of lying on the stretcher and going out in an ambulance.
He eventually came to bat also, though the inning was short as Venky scored only 16 when he was dismissed by Tanush Kotian.
Matched of the Duleep Trophy is crucial for the all-rounder as he is looking to earn his place back in the blues. He was not able to catch the eyes of selectors for the T20 World Cup though and Hardik Pandya’s epic form was also something that pushed him back in the line.
He has been out of the Indian Blue since he was dropped from the team a year ago and has not been able to make a comeback since then. Poor performance in IPL 2022 and struggle in making runs and taking wickets in domestic cricket are also doing immense damage to his Indian team contention.
As of now, he has played just 9 T20Is for India scoring 133 runs at a strike rate of 162 while he has been part of the Blue brigade for just two matches.
