Australia kicks off Women's Cricket World Cup campaign with 12-run victory over England - ABC News

Australian women beat the England women by 12 runs in their first game of the tournament. Australian women showed pure dominance in both the departments (batting and bowling). The main highlight for Australia’s batting was their experienced opener, Rachael Haynes, who went on to score a brilliant century and took the team to a 300+ score. She scored 130 runs on run-a-ball rate and hit 14 fours and one six in the duration of her innings.

England Women won the toss and opt to bowl, although it was the only good thing happened to them in the whole day. The Australian batsmen smashed the English women all-round the park and scored big runs. The only bowler from England side, who picked up most of the wickets was Nat Sciver ; she also scored a century from England’s side.

However, England team could not chase down the score of 310 runs in their 50 overs as Australian bowlers were right on the money and picked up key wickets at regular intervals. Lone warrior, Natalie Sciver, could not win the match singlehandedly as she lost support on the other end. England women were stopped at the score of 298 runs with the loss of eight wickets.

Jess Jonassen changed the game as Captain, Meg Lanning turned to part-time option for the last over like West Indies did the day before. Moreover, the gamble proved to be a success as Jess saved the 15 runs needed off the last over and took two wickets in the over, leading Aussies to win the match by 12 runs and continue their unbeaten streak.

Meg Lanning, Australia captain:

Nice to get a win first up. Expected a contest and that’s what we got. We did well to get to 311 to be honest. Was tricky batting at the start, seemed to flatten out as the day went. She wanted the ball (Jonassen), she’s bowled big overs before and delivered. She probably could’ve bowled a few more overs. Expected that at the halfway mark, knew it was a good score, but we expected the batting conditions to get better.

We bowled well in parts, probably not as consistent as we’d have liked. Fielding needs improvement starting from me. But it’s good to get a win, World Cups are about winning. She bowled beautifully there, she changed the game for us (King). Rod and Shane, obviously big losses for cricket and have had a big impact on the game.

Heather Knight, England captain:

For us as a batting unit that’s a confidence booster. The Ashes wasn’t a true representation of us. To see how aggressive we were, how well we ran, and what an innings from Sciver, almost deserved to be on the winning side. Not the end of the world for us. Lost the first game in 2017 as well. Led by Tammy, carried on by Nat with that fine innings.

She’s brilliant to have in your side, true allrounder, probably one of our best fielders too. Probably the best knock I’ve seen (Nat Sciver). Playing seven batters limits the options a little bit. But today we felt like this is our best balance. Not worried about our bowling unit at all. They’ve been a strength for us. Was a great watch last night wasn’t it. Going to be a brilliant competition. Going to have to be on top form to best the West Indies.
