Ravichandran Ashwin has been in the news for about a month now and the entire credit goes to his brilliant all-round performance. And this time he is in the news for another achievement that he can cross off his checklist, 400 wickets in test cricket.
In the third test match, of the ongoing India vs England series, Ashwin who bowled brilliantly on a turning wicket with the pink ball picked up his 400th wicket. In the second innings of the match, Jofra Archer became his victim of the 400th wicket.
Ashwin made his test debut against West Indies in 2011, Since then he has come a long way to become India’s one of the match winners with bat and ball. Middle-order batting can be very tricky, but he has been sensible in his approach. He knows when to attack the ball and when to stay calm. We have seen that recently against Australia and England.
Usually, we see fast bowlers opening the bowling with the new ball, Ashwin broke this trend and we have seen him taking the new ball on many occasions. And of course, the Indian pitch conditions allow him to do that. He is known to trouble left-handers with his off-spin, The players that he has dismissed most times are proof of that. He has gotten rid of Ben Stokes 11 times and Alastair Cook 10 times.
400th for him was exceptional. He became the second-fastest to reach this figure, it took him 77 matches just behind Muttiah Muralitharan who took 72 matches. There are many more records that he holds including his personal best match figures of 13 for 140 against New-Zealand in 2016. And he ranks at the top amongst the spinners with the best strike rate (53), Muttiah Muralitharan is the next best with 55.
Ashwin has become a crucial part of the Indian team and he has many more records to break, 400th wicket is just another feather in his cap.
