The two time CPL champions, take on this year with more challanges. Did not qualify for the playoffs last season, but are back with a strong squad. Led by Jason Holder, Barbados Tridents have been rather binary in their performances over the years in the CPL. They have been crowned as winners 2 times but in other editions, they have either finished 5th or got the wooden spoon.
The Barbados Tridents released eight players from their squad ahead of the upcoming Caribbean Premier League 2021. One of those eight players was the spin king, Rashid Khan. It was a very brave move to release Rashid Khan. He scalped 11 wickets last season of CPL at an average of 22.64. He was their highest wicket taker, but the Tridents had some other plans. Apart from Rashid Khan, Barbados have let go of veteran New Zealand all rounder Corey Anderson and spinner-allrounder Mitchell Santner. Ashley Nurse, Shamarh Brooks and Jonathan Carter also lost their contracts.
They have retained their skipper, Jason Holder, wicketkeeper batsman Shai Hope and the young gun, Kyle Mayers. Kyle was the highest run getter for Barbados previous season. The Barbados Tridents could win only 3 out of their 10 games in the previous edition of CPL, hence, they might be looking for some fresh faces in this draft.
Their biggest signing this year has to be the ace stalwarth, Mohammad Amir. Amir, is still one of the best new ball bowler across the globe. He will be making his debut this season with the Barbados Tridents. Chris Morris, the most expensive buy in the history of IPL, has been acquired by Barbados ahead of this year’s CPL. Morris had a positive IPL in 2021, he was handy with the bat and picked important wickets within the course of play. Thisara Perera, the Sri Lankan all rounder will also be donning Barbados’ jersey. The caribbean pacer Oshane Thomas, Pakistani Azam Khan and Shafiqulla Ghazari are the other new names in the squad.
What to expect
Barbados Tridents rely a lot on their top order batsmen, Shai Hope and the young star Kyle Mayers. Kyle Mayers was their most successful batsmen in the previous edition of CPL. They don’t have any big names in their batting order but some good sloggers down the order. Chris Morris, Thisara Perera and skipper Jason Holder can be relied upon for hitting some biggies down the order. Their main worry would still be the middle order, to tackle the spinners in the middle overs and anchoring the innings. Jason Holder might come up the order to solve this issue.
Tridents, out of all teams, have one of the best pace attack right now. They were pretty clear with their requirement in the auction. Picking up 2 pace bowling all rounders, they have strengthened the bowling. Mohammad Amir and Oshane Thomas with the new ball. Jason Holder and Chris Morris firing yorkers in the death would prove deadly for every team who play against them. The middle overs still is a worry for them as they don’t have an experienced spinners within them. Letting go of Rashid Khan might prove fatal.
